The Gay issue |

OK, I am a Gay single parent of a three year old daughter. How might I expect a Waldorf School to react to this? Does Anthroposophy address Homosexuality? Any links that I should check out?

In our current Waldorf school, the recruitment officer is consciously trying to "diversify" the school community - she's seeking minority families of all kinds, including gay- and lesbian-parented families.
Our school has had a two-mom family in the past, A gay couple's child was accepted last year and this year a lesbian couple is being courted. I guess that again, like with so many other issues, it depends on which Waldorf school one attends. |

Hard to imagine anyone in a Waldorf community having an issue with this, though. Lifestyle choices that affect the child's ability to focus on their school experience, I can see. But not personal life choices of an intimate, adult nature. |

A few kids at our Waldorf school have "come out" so to speak. They seem to be treated OK. I don't think it's too much of an issue - but as Baandje said, your milage may vary.

Hello, I am a prospective teacher of the Waldorf Schools and a parent to be. I realize your post is outdated, but in the off chance, you have found information on how The Waldorf School system reacts to gay or lesbian teachers, parents or children I would appreciate you help in obtaining the information. Its very difficult finding information on the subject. Thank you

Wow, Steiner wasn't a gaybasher?

I am talking about current thoughts and issues. The way someone felt a hundred years ago may not necessarily hold true to this day as a lot has changed in the past hundred years, in both Europe and the rest of the world.
I don't know how Steiner felt about gay issues, as they weren't present many years ago. I am here to find information from current teachers, parents and students. If you have helpful thoughts- please elaborate. Otherwise, your post was rather ambiguous and unhelpful. |

It wasn't meant to be helpful or meaningful. It was sarcasm. I'm sorry I couldn't get down on my knees and serve what you want on a platter. Maybe we should make a rule that every post here is catered to what you want to read.

Well, thanks for that Jwark.
One issue (marginally related - and I hope this isn't misconstrued by anyone other tha Jwark) is how Waldorf deals with HIV. If a child is known to have HIV or one of the parents is known to have HIV, how does/should Waldorf deal with this (if at all). This became an issue at my kid's school recently. I wonder how it's being treated in Waldorf teacher training. PK |

Re: ha | ||

I'm sure they have no policy because every Waldorf school is negligent and doesn't care about important things like how do deal with HIV.
Seriously though, I have no idea what their policy is. Glad I could help even more. |

Well, I know that in my kid's school, there was an issue about whether it was appropriate to tell the entire community or protect the privacy of the person. I don't really have an answer for this one (hard to believe, huh).

I got the impression at our former Waldorf school that it was actually quite a comfortable place for gay students in terms of social acceptance.
On the other hand, something to be considered by all prospective parents is the racial spiritual evolution theory which is part of the foundation of Rudolf Steiner's Anthroposophical teachings. From what I understand, some Anthroposophists truly believe the theory is not racist. I agree with the many critics who believe it is. I have explained it to African American and Ugandan friends. They are appalled by it. The following is a link to an essay by a former Waldorf student about Steiner's racist doctrine. homepage.mac.com/nonlevitating/nine.html Also to be considered is Steiner's teaching that some children are demons in human form. In the following quote I believe he is referring to a learning disabled girl. Quote: The above quote can be found at: www.waldorfcritics.org/active/articles/Racism_general.html |
